“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.”

John 12:32 (BSB)

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19-20 (BSB)

Exploring Magnetism Attraction and Repulsion

02Goals

Goals

The goal of this test was to use different motion design skills to visually connect with scripture. Using a physics-based motion design for this scripture seemed relevant since "will draw everyone to Myself" pulls them in, and "go and make disciples of all nations" allows them to scatter.

Idea

Let the verses move the shapes: drawn in by John 12:32, sent out by Matthew 28:19-20.

What I tried

Keyframed Newton's magnetism type to switch the words from attraction to repulsion and back.

What happened

The shapes gather tight around the words, then scatter outward toward the edges.

Versions and process

The same motion with only the references, so the gather and scatter read on their own.
Process: the raw Newton simulation before color and glow.
Process: the first test, flat shapes with no glow or verse text.

What I learned

  1. 01

I have not used Motion Boutique's Newton simulation in After Effects in a while, so this was a bit of a refresher. It was the first time I used the keyframes inside Newton to toggle the amount of repulsion and attraction, allowing the shapes to pull away and draw closer to the words.

  2. 02

Since the text was heavy in Newton, I turned it into a convex hull, which drastically improved the real-time rendering. I learned that slight changes in the friction, bounce, and density helped me control the behavior of the shapes that I wanted to stay in certain areas of the composition.
